méxicoNOW, a project of Arts International, is a landmark event: the first citywide, multi-venue arts festival focused entirely on contemporary Mexico. Throughout the month of November, the work of over 100 Mexican filmmakers, architects, writers, musicians, performers, and visual artists will be featured at over 30 of New York City 's leading cultural venues.

An emphasis on building long-term cultural understanding has characterized méxicoNOW from the very beginning. Over half of the events are in both English and Spanish, but cultural context goes beyond language: the festival delves into the essence of Mexican life, society, and politics with art and events that explore topics ranging from NAFTA's impact on Mexican culture to the Chicano experience to identity and artmaking in contemporary Mexico.

The festival is the result of three years of curatorial innovation, collective effort, and a shared commitment to a vision of a citywide celebration of the best and newest contemporary Mexican art. Originally conceived on a much smaller scale, méxicoNOW has grown to include more than 30 venues and over 150 events. It has grown because of the exhilarating breadth and width of Mexican art and artists, and also because of the commitment of the many organizational and artistic partners in both New York City and Mexico.

Arts International, as the nation's only non-profit organization devoted solely to furthering cultural exchange, understands the importance of bringing people together and presenting more than one point of view or artistic vision of a country. Arts International decided to make it possible for representatives of all the venues in New York to travel to Mexico so that they could each select work, ensuring that the festival would reflect multiple viewpoints. This opportunity enabled these presenters to develop relationships with artists, more fully investigate the range of contemporary performing and visual arts in Mexico, and ultimately select work best suited for their venue and for New York City 's diverse audiences.
