Lila Downs Monday , September 15 , 8:00 pm Oaxacan born singer and Latin Grammy Award winner Lila Downs performs music from her new CD release “Shake Away” (Ojos De Culebra). Many new songs address heated topics of immigration, political justice, and transformation, delivered with Downs’ singular mix of vulnerability, compassion, and humor. The result is an irresistible and passionate pastiche of musical styles--from Blues and Beat-poet influences to traditional Banda--that also taps into the Mesoamerican music of the Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya, and Nahuatl cultures.
Lila will also perform several songs with The Mariachi Academy of NY --a community-led, not-for-profit organization devoted to preserving the rich heritage of mariachi to youth in New York--paying tribute to the quintessential Mexican folk-derived musical tradition.
Pistolera, an electrifying NYC based quartet that defines the Latin alt-folklorico genre, will open the show. Drawing from many styles of traditional Mexican music and fusing it with pop-rock sensibility, Pistolera’s debut album (Siempre hay Salida) reached the Top 10 of the College Music Journal (CMJ) charts.
